Playing Catch Up!

I know,  I  know! I have been VERY delinquent in my blog these days but it being year end and Christmas just around the corner its been a very busy month or so.  Just a little high level note to let you know whats been happening lately:

• I was nominated and awarded a role on our Board of Directors as Secertary, this has also proved to be a very busy task at this time of year preparing year end reports, annual general meeting etc..but I am VERY happy to be a part of the BOD and have some input in the future of the Dieppe Roller Derby
• I spent a day with the gang from Fog City Rollers (Saint John) with I'd Hit That, Vigilante Banshee and JaggerMaster.  We got to participate in their practice, scrimmage and meet some of the group.  I had a fantastic time and I can't thanks the lovely ladies of FCR enough! It was a great experience and thanks so much for the opportunity! DRD loves all things FCR!
• Had a couple insane practices where I thought for sure Pixel Ninja was trying to kill me! But man, I keep going back and feel great! Feeling much more confident in my skills and I know his training is what is making that happen!
• I got some awesome new gear, my VERY OWN JUKES! :) Rector Fat Boy Knee Pads, 187 Wrist Guards and a new professional custom made mouth guards from the students of Oulton College Dental Program.
• Had some of our girls leave DRD and it will be sad to not see them around but I wish each of you all the best and hope that we see each other again soon...Klem'Mydia Burns, InstaBitch, Monkey Face and Caraseen Fury..miss you ladies already! :(

We just started our Christmas Break and I am off to Jamaica in 5 more sleeps! I cant wait although 3 weeks with no derby will be rough, gonna have to squeeze in push ups, sit ups, lunges, and squats while I am away or I will be in a lot of pain when I get back...LOL

Anyway folks, I wish you all a very happy holiday and I promise to update more often in the new year!

This has been a great couple weeks! I made the team and I passed my final stage of my minimum skills requirement test and got a cool certificate too :) So I am no longer considered Fresh Meat…I am no longer “becoming a derby girl” I am a derby girl! YEAH ME!

A few of this reached this stage together graduating from Fresh Meat to Derby Girl is a pretty cool feeling, we have all worked so hard and its really paying off! However, this does leave me thinking that seeing I am no longer “becoming a derby girl” I maybe should change the name of my blog?? So I have decided on a contest for my readers.

You my readers are going to help me re-name my blog! The members of “Hits n’ Sass”, DRD coaches and officials are NOT eligible for this contest because they are going to help me decide on the winner.  It is however, open to league members of the Dieppe Roller Derby that are not affiliated with “Hits n’ Sass”, It is also open to any other roller girls and guys, and Roller Derby Fans.  This contest is open to anyone who has “liked” my facebook page.  All entries should be emailed to alisetkill@diepperollerderby.com Contest closes on December 15.  For those of you have been following me for awhile you surely know enough about me to come up with an awesome name for my blog so good luck and stay tuned for an update on what your awesome prize will be! And without giving away too many secerts thats all I'll say on that duo...you'll just have to come watch us play in the spring to experiance it yourself.... :)

Lipsmack is training right now to be a jammer and I've not seen much like her before she weaves, bobs, jumps, falls down, gets back up and still manages to knock me on my ass.....LOL Congrats Lipsmack!

I am officially now a Derby Girl! Yes folks my name was called, I heard it and accepted the challenge! I am a member of Hits n' Sass!  I never would have thought I would be here but I am and I am so excited I haven't stopped yammering on about it....LOL  Check here to view the official roster >> www.hitsnsass.com . 

 

I went out last night with the girls and promised myself I wouldn't check the darn site every 15 minutes....so at 930 after Pixel Ninja said something about server issues I assumed nothing would be posted anyway....needless to say he was just having some fun with me,...LOL (I think he is having to much fun dropping a couple names at a time every couple days..LOL).  Close to midnight I thought I should check and wow I was surprised! ....so needless to say EVERYONE heard my reaction and I sure turned some heads with my little "I'm so excited dance"...LOL I was glad I found out when I did because I then was able to officially celebrate with the some of my favorite derby gals! ....I requested our Leagues favorite song and we all danced, drank and had a blast. 

 

I am so very excited I cant even really put my thoughts together....but I will say this....I have worked hard and as coach said "you earned it" I promise team I wont let you down!

Also added to the roster with me last night was Barbarian of El! Yeahhhh girl I am so happy for us both! Now we can hip check girls on the track instead of each other! Congratulations hun, also very well deserved!

History in the Making!

It is time ladies and gentleman! Are you ready for it???? The day has finally come....Dieppe Roller Derby has just starting drafting our league members into the FIRST team Hits N' Sass! And OMG I am soooo excited I can barely think of much else today!!

 

 

Everyone in both A and B training squads have been working so hard and this has been anticipated by all of us for some time now.  Each of us working very hard to be a part of the team....the first team!  Once you have a team then that means preparation and training for the 2012 bout season......whoo hooo!!!!!!

 

There are a lot of spots up for grabs and who will be on DRD's first team is still unknown to us! Teams can have up to 20 players with 14 dressing for a game.  Once the roster is full then we start to plan for the next team :) The team website has been updated and a roster page has been added...Pixel Ninja (our coach) is seriously trying to make us freaking crazy by only adding a few names every couple of days...LOL  He and the team captains have selected the team and now its just a waiting game to see who gets drafted and when.  So the idea is that you....yes YOU my friends, family and fans find out when each of us do so be sure to check the website to see who has been drafted to Hits N' Sass....keep your fingers crossed that yours truly makes the cut :) Bookmark this website and check it often >> www.hitsnsass.com

Happy Halloween My Friends

I have to work tonight :( It is Halloween and that means time to do Pumpkin Patrol.  I work for Rogers and every year we patrol the street to make sure your little trick or treaters are safe and sound!  While I am busy at that my team mates of the Dieppe Roller Derby will be pushing shopping carts through the streets of Dieppe collecting non perishable food items for "Trick or Eat".  There is no practice tonight however making sure our kids are safe and making sure that local food banks get the focus and donations they need so much is very important and sounds like a pretty good reason to cancel a practice.

Boys?

Oh yes ladies and gentleman there is something for everyone at the Dieppe Roller Derby! Right now our league is focusing on developing our women's teams but yes men do play roller derby too! Right now we have 4 men plus our coach and they are training with us, learning the game and will be refs and maybe even coaches as we grow.  But what is in the works is just as exciting to watch unfold as our women team is our men's team.  Like Hits n' Sass, Camokaze Killers is slowing becoming its own too.  We have watched these guys grow as we have, they have learned to skate, earned those ninja bruises and of course get the crap kicked out of them by a bunch of girls....LOL So for my male readers if your interested in becoming a part of this unique squad send an email to brad@diepperollerderby.com! Plus us the girls don't mind another guy around to smack on the butt when you do a great job....hummm I mean give you a pat on the back...LOL

Our guys are great! And when I say great I mean fantastic! They are such good sports and even let us get away with dressing them in Tutu's and high heels only on very special occasions...LOL  They show up and help at all of our fundraisers and even volunteer to help wonderful causes like "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" a fundraiser supporting against Domestic Violence a group that is very near and dear to our hearts as we the Dieppe Roller Derby works very close with Crossroads for Women. Roller derby is about empowering women and what better way to give back to our community!

Black and Blue: The Ninja Bruise

I have been very lucky thus far in my Derby Journey not to have ended up all bruised and battered looking LOL Until now! I am sure that all the drills that we are doing now involving contact have a lot to do with it, I mean I guess its a given considering the pace has stepped up a lot since moving to A squad.  We aren't just learning to skate anymore its all about learning the game and technique now.  Getting knocked over by my teammates is bound to make me a little tender at times, but is still sooo much fun!

 

So we call them "Ninja Bruises", Bruises that are derby related but your unsure exactly what you did to cause them, they start off light then get pretty crazy looking.  These are pics of my first one.  I should also add that being bruise free this long I have earned 4 moew just like these! So let just say my legs are looking a little Black and Blue ...LOL

That My Friends Is Why We Wear Helmets!

Finally we have graduated to scrimmage practices, time to play with the pack and start to learn the rules and game play of Roller Derby...Finally time to learn how to block..aka hit....who knew I would like that part so much but it's F@$cking awesome! (I will explain in another post how to block and what is legal and what is not.)  The first couple of weeks I had to sit out due to a broken toe (not derby related).  I can not tell you how bad it sucks to sit there watching and not get to practice.  This week I did get to do some pack drills, turns out I may have a pretty good bootie block (this will be most helpful...LOL), I even took my shot at jammer for a couple drills...that was a lot of fun, we all should learn to do it and we will, but I think I enjoy the blocking most of all.

Last night we were doing some pack drills.  One jammer, 5 blockers on the track.....I am making way around the track as part of the pack and Vigilante Banshee falls (she hurt her ankle quite badly a couple practices ago and reinjured it last night...hope your feeling better today girl!) ...it was either skate right over her or do a Pornstar (aka Four Point Fall) Heres a little clip explaining the Pornstar but you have to picture it with Vigilante on the floor and me flying over the top of her legs while landing into a darn good Pornstar ..LOL

I get up and go again, smiling at what I think was a dam great Pornstar!!.....And it happens, I wipe out again however this time not with such grace....Im going around the turn, wipe out land on my butt, and my head bangs on the concrete floor.  I hear Coach Pixel Ninja "Are you OK can you keep going?" I bounce to my feet, shake my head and off I am again saying "Yup, Im good".......make a couple more turns around the track, smiling having fun then BOOM....wipe out again!...This time right square on my butt with my head hitting the concrete so hard it bounced! I hear a huge "Ohhhhh" from my teammates and I hear again from Coach " Are you OK?" I roll over on my stomach, laughing and crying at the same time...."I'm OK but I'm done for tonight"! I am fine, no concussion or anything but it did leave me dazed and confused for a couple of minutes, and a stiff neck today! 

All I can say is my helmet prevented a potentially serious injury last night! It is however very important to always wear it and to wear it proper adjusted to fit you and straps done up.  It happened so quickly I would hate to think what would have happened if I didn't have one.  Our helmets are lined with softer foam than bicycle helmets and are made for multiple impact use. The helmets also are designed to cover more of the back of your head which is ideal for the unexpected backwards falls that can happen in derby, especially while learning to skate.  It is not recommended to buy a second-hand helmet as it can be hard to tell if a helmet has been damaged in a crash.

.....I think I maybe should move the new helmet further up the list on my wish list, just to be on the safe side.  :)

The world of Roller Derby is a very colorful one! Full of vibrant neon, bright bold colors....Derby fashion is a style all of its own...knee socks, fishnets,short skirts, Tutu's and bootie shorts (which are really underwear and are worn on the outside of your pants...LOL). The Halloween Store is like Bloomingdale's for the Derby Girl!

 

Those of you that know me know that I am a pretty conservative person and from business casual to Derby is quite a stretch for me...LOL...But here I am obsessed with buying "stuff for derby" I have more booties shorts and socks than Walmart...LOL...This new found confidence Roller Derby has given me shocks even me!...LOL

 

A funny story for you though, I am getting ready for practice one night and I am outside my house packing up my car and my friend drops by for a quick visit...she and I are standing on the sidewalk having a chat and a truck goes by and the poor guy almost ran into the telephone pole trying to get a look, pretty sure I was a bit of a distraction standing there with fishnets and bootie shorts...LMAO, my neighbourhood will never be the same again...LOL

Tricky Little Ninja!

OK You have heard me say before how awesome we all think our coach Pixel Ninja is! If not you have not been paying attention which means you can try some sit ups, push ups and do them with a smile!...LOL...Kidding if you need a reminder flip back to July and read the post titled "Pixel Ninja AKA the Coach"

One of the things I like most is he is always smiling...even when he is not happy with you he's still smiling....smiling except when your trying to find a picture of him smiling...good luck with that....I asked tonight for a picture of him smiling cause he was putting a crimp in my creative mojo trying to write this blog!...LOL "I don't like having my picture taken", he says...LOL



Pixel Ninja

 Plan A was to show my readers this happy sneaky smile we always see...the smile that tells you he is plotting his next drill...LOL...and I was gonna show you the face I saw tonight!  So I will have to show you Plan B...the face I saw tonight ....this picture is pretty close. He doesn't look happy does he?...would you think you did something wrong when he waves you over and says "I need to talk to you about something"?...HELLO I thought for sure I did something wrong and thinking to myself ...what could I have done?...LOL...I asked and of course he goes with it and says, "Well Alise, we do have to talk about something"...Crap! I'm thinking "I have only been on A Squad for a weekend, this is the first A Squad practice they changed their mind I am going to B, what did I do, no smile, he means business" He says, "You remember that skills test your working on"....Again I am thinking "I messed up! I am done!" He says, "Well....(loooong pause, looking very serious).....You passed your level one!"......Pixel Ninja is a tricky Ninja, sensed my anxiety and went with it...LOL...It was pretty funny actually!

I was pretty excited! Another achievement! Lip Smack, Cherry Dread, I'd Hit That and myself all passed our level one skills test tonight! Now we join the rest of our squad and can start working towards our next level together! He breaks skills test into 3 levels so we have two more to go!

All and all there were some laughs, and jokes on me...but hey I'm thinking shenanigans are in order now!

A Squad Practice

Tonight was a BIG night...it was our first squad practice.  It was great! We got to do some different drills, some drills that we haven't done in awhile and it  was also our first practice back in the Lions Club...the season is fast approaching and all our arenas are putting ice down which means no more arena practices for awhile :( The folks at the Lions Club really are great to us and we enjoy practicing there.  The squads also help when practicing in this space because there is not as many of us practicing at one time. Although I must admit I miss my friends on the B squad but we will plan some shenanigans soon I am sure :)

We even got to start doing some pushing drills...OH THE FUN! I know some girls couldn't wait till we got to this point.  I am pretty sure no one expected me to be as excited as I was...LOL...mind you my excitement was afterwards, I'm sure I had a nervous face when he called the drill.  It was a pretty intense workout tonight, I loved every minute of it but I will say there where times when I saw Pixel Ninja with his whistle in his mouth where I was thinking "just blow the dam thing already!"...LOL I was smiling on the outside but dying on the inside...push ups, sit ups ...OMG I surely will hurt tomorrow!...LOL
