Talk Derby to Me

We all have different reasons for playing Roller Derby but this is why some of the members of the OC Roller Girls play derby. I am kinda like the girl who cant think of a reason why she shouldn't play...LOL

ESPN Report

This is a broadcast from ESPN of which some Roller Girls explain what the sport is all about! There is so much in this report that really hits home and it explains the phenomena perfectly!  There are some great messages about the sport, the friendship, the alter-egos, the fashion and empowerment of Roller Derby! Its worth the few minutes it takes to watch it.

Ooops

No mistake about it Roller Derby is a contact sport! I mean skating around a track the size of a basketball court with a girl trying her best to get past a pack of girls who are hungry to win, getting hurt can happen. This is why we practice over and over and over again to bend your knees (creates stability), falling down ( so you instinctively do it properly if you have to go down), this is why we wear equipment to protect our head, teeth, knees, wrists and elbows. Even with the best of intentions people can get hurt.

Last night we did a pack drill (AWESOME!) we all had our scrimmage shirts on (oh must post a pic soon, has my name on it so excited!) at coach's request...half the girls white the other half black the intent was for the entire pack behind to get through the pack in the front. Yippie starting to learn the game ...only gets more fun going forward I am certain!

We are a fierce group of competitors even within our own league we were ready to rumble...no one was stopping us from getting through (unless of course coach blows that whistle of his). I got on the inside of the track.  I got through every time however it took a lot of effort. But man it felt good!

Alise T'Kill & I'd Hit That

My dear friend I'd Hit That decided she was gonna try and pass me on the inside of the track....HELL NO I say! I got in Derby Stance (which now starting to look like Derby Stance and not a deer on ice...LOL), back straight, knees bent, bootie out and somehow my elbow managed to hit her face and I gave her a fat lip! OMG I felt so bad! At least she had her mouth guard in and she didn't loose a tooth or something...that would be really bad!  Good news though as I said Derby Girls love their injuries now she can say her sister wife beats  her and gave her a fat lip...LOL...I am sorry and I'm glad its not too bad today!

We have a new member of our group... Lipsmack...last night she met my bootie more that once! Apparently, I'm getting pretty good at this bootie block!..LOL.  Anyway she got by me a couple times but not without my butt pushing her out of bounds a couple of times! Yeah me!..LOL...Welcome to our league Lipsmack we are so happy to have you!

OK so that's 3 blog entries for one night I think you should all be caught up by now...It's 2 am and time for sleep...Practice tomorrow night! :)

Pride

This weekend the Dieppe Roller Derby skated in the Moncton Gay Pride Parade! Such an awesome experience and we met so many amazing people....The parade really represents people who in my mind are proud to be who they are...it's not really about being gay or not it's being proud of yourself and the people you care about...a lot more people in this world should experience this example in pride and compassion!

I was proud to be there and I was so proud at the amount of people that came out to celebrate...I even wore a tutu and yes my dog Fritz did too! ...LOL

25 in 5

It seems I have a bit of a following of late people actually asking for me to write a new entry :) Every time I do something blog worthy Coach Pixel Ninja says "I sense a blog coming up"...LOL I have been behind a bit but life in general is kinda crazy lately so I promise to stay more on top of the blog! :)

But I do have some very exciting news to share I was so excited to write this entry that it bothered me all day that I couldn't get to it....last night Pixel Ninja even asked if he should wait up for it...LOL

So my big news?...I finally freaking did it!! I got my 25 laps around the track in 5 minutes...those of you who are just tuning in now this is a requirement for our skills test. Monday night I was pretty disappointed to be so close (I got 24) I was so upset with myself and I realize now I shouldn't have been because all things considered I am catching on to this Roller Derby thing pretty quick...I stand back, I watch Dii Mented and others, I make notes in my head then I try it and I may not get it the first time around but it hasn't taken long to pick up on stuff...except this darn 25 in 5! But I did it!

Dii Mented showed me a couple of practices ago how to do it, because there is a technique you don't just strap on your wheels and go ...I mean you can but once you know the trick to get around the track its so much easier...you don't get as tired and don't use as much energy....you pick up as few laps doing it with technique I was going around the track with a few girls ...Dii Mented was one of them ...I lost my rhythm and then she ends up in front of me ...JACKPOT! So I followed her for a couple of laps and I was good to rock and roll!!

I need to make a special thanks here to Dii Mented I am not sure you realize just how much I learn from you every practice but you really help me every practice get better just like you always watch us...I'm always watching you! (and not in a creepy stalker way either ...LOL) But you really have helped me a lot even if we are not talking about something one on one I am always watching to see how you do stuff! So thanks for being such a great example to follow! :)

Now I'm not gonna lie it helps a lot when you hear other girls while your breezing by cheering you on! Wednesday night I knew I was close I could tell by the tone of Pixel Ninjas voice he wasn't saying it but I could tell by his tone I was making good time and I would be close.....the whistle blew...times up...I'd Hit That was counting my laps I saw Pixel Ninja ask her how I did then I heard her say "you did it, you did it, 25 in 5" I thought I would pee my pants I let out a big "whooohooo" High fives all around...LOL...I seriously felt like I won the freaking lottery!

As you have heard me say before I have never been part of a team much less play any kind of sport so this was like winning a gold medal at the freaking Olympics!! ...LOL

All I Got

Sometimes we all need a little pick me up....this is from a MMA fight but I think it sums things up pretty good! (Lyrics below)

All I Got lyrics by Mc Hush
It's my time to shine I can't let nothing hold me back
This ring is my stage
Yo, Everybody gotta a story to tell,
my book begins when the rest of the world has to look
my life, my eyes the things that I've seen
my world, my pain, the things that I dream
this time is my turn, I know what I've got
One Blood
One Heart
One Mind
And one shot
I've got to prove to myself that I cannot fall
I can feel the weight of the world in my palm
I fight myself inside everyday
I know it's a struggle but still I maintain
To play by the rule
this whole way
tonight is my night!
today is my day!
It's my life
i'm not gonna waste it
It's my dream
You know I gotta face it
No Fear, No time to go back
I've gotta leave a plan or blood on that mat
this is it
It's all I got
One Blood
One Heart
One Mind
And one shot
this is it
What I waited for
Everything that I worked hard to gain for
My fear I gotta face it
So close I can taste it
This is it
It's all I got
One Blood
One Heart
One Mind
And one shot

Butt Lift? Hell Yeah!

Well let's just say I took out my favorite pair of jeans yesterday and they do not fit! My favorite jeans have served me well but its time to put them away for good....the butt is saggy and way too big in the waist...this makes me so happy!

I have been told numerous times to throw out my scales and not to weigh myself because things will turn to muscle and things will shift...well my legs don't jiggle anymore and I have measured myself and I have lost a total of 10" so far! (EDIT: OK so I obviously can not add! It's 8" people, and a couple inches may have been from just before I started. Either way not bad for only being at it for a month and a half!) Now if I can only figure out why my boobs are shrinking (the one thing I would like to hang onto) things would be perfect..LOL

There really is a lot to be said about finding an exercise that you enjoy! Oh how I love thee Roller Derby! xo

Pimp My Ride

Today it was Pimp My Ride Roller Derby style! :)

My Flat Out's aka Training Wheels
Kitty offered to let me use her new wheels while she is recovering. So today I brought them to Pixel Ninja and he cleaned my bearings, put new cushions on and changed the wheels for me.  I have to say as excited as I am to try them I am a little nervous to leave the comfort of my "training wheels". They have served me well providing me with comfort and stability during the last month or so...I know I sound like I am laying to them to rest and I am pretty sure that is the case as I am told I will not want to go back after I try Kitty's "Jukes".

Kitty's Jukes
Here you can see the difference in
surface and width between my Flat Outs and
 the Jukes.

What are these new wheels going to do for me? How I see it, your wheels on your Roller Skates are the engine of your ride.  The difference in wheels is like the difference between a V6 and a V8 engine....these puppies are gonna make me go fast!  I can't wait to try them tomorrow to feel the difference!  They are durable for all types of surfaces which is also a good thing since we practice on a few different types of surfaces.

The cushions on my skates
are the yellow and purple in the picture
Now my cushions...there are 4 different types each has 2 shapes, a barrel and a cone (cone is a bit softer feeling cause it has less material) each type is a different colour and are different stiffness each a little softer than the other and the softer they are the less work is required to make the trucks of your skates turn...I love doing our cone exercises and if I do say so myself I rock the cones!  Pixel Ninja loosened my trucks the other day and I felt like I was a pro skater going through those cones! I wonder what difference it will make with the new cushions?  My bearings are now nice and clean ...you need to do regular maintenance on that stuff and mine were making some bizarre noise that even puzzled the coach so we are hoping cleaning the bearings fixed that little problem....he also used a speed cream bearing lube....so I am good to go....gonna be a speed demon now :)

Thanks again Kitty Von Doom for letting me try out your wheels and thanks Pixel Ninja for Pimping my Ride! :)

Queen of the Track

Injuries are common in any type of sport...Roller Derby is no different.  Being trained properly is the first step to prevent injuries and we also know that sometimes it just happens.  Wednesday night we were playing Queen of the Track.  This is an exercise where 2 girls are in the track and the goal is to try and get the other girl out of the track.  It is an exercise good for learning how to block.  You push against each other there is no hitting or shoving. (We are warned at the start of the exercise not to hit or we sit out)  Whoever is left inside the track is considered Queen of the Track.  My Derby Wife Kitty Von Doom and FireCrackYa were in the track and my wifey slipped, tried to brace herself from falling and went down.  You could recognize very quickly that she was hurt. Anytime anyone is hurt it is a respect thing that you immediately get down on one knee and stay there until the injured person is able to get up.  A lot of us are trained in first aid but luckily we had a paramedic observing our practice so Kitty was in excellent hands.

As Derby Wife it was my job to take her to the hospital (which I did without hesitation).   I will say she was a trooper if it was me I would have been crying like a bloody fool all night! We got to the hospital and they immediately brought her into trauma and arranged an x-ray and and an ultrasound.  Turns out her ankle was broken in 2 places and would require surgery.  Who likes surgery?? NO ONE! But in light of it all Kitty still kept her shit together! Of course I guess the drugs they give you help a lot....LOL :)

One thing I have learned about Derby Girls is they wear there injuries with pride! They are so very proud of their rink rash (often caused by fish nets), bumps, bruises, cuts and scraps.  Often posting pictures to share with the group as a badge of honour sort of speak.  A broken ankle would be no different. We weren't in the hospital 15 minutes before she says "take my picture"...LOL....So I did, and here they are :)

The hospital staff kept saying she broken her ankle playing Roller Derby we chuckled a bit at how the doctor would drag it out "Rolllllller Deeeeeeerrrby"...LOL...Kitty kept interrupting them saying "I was practicing I wasn't playing...there is a difference you know"...LOL...

Kitty kept saying this is the very first accident we have had in our league(which is very true).  It was awesome to see how everyone came together for Kitty.  Numerous text messages, phone calls, emails to see how she was doing.  FireCrackYa and Pixel Ninja came to the hospital to check on her and keep me company as one point the kicked me out of her room while they put this lovely splint on her ankle.  Of which she kept asking for in pink....LOL.....

Well Kitty that was our one week Derby Wife Anniversary and already I have had to witness your drunk ass at a party AND take you to the hospital....but I would do it all over again tomorrow....you have become a dear friend in such a short time and I just wish you a speedy recovery so you can get back on those feet and back on your skates! Even though you broke your ankle during that drill you are still Queen of the Track in my mind! Sending you lots of Derby Love and get well soon!

Tonights the Night

Tonight I am told we will have a lesson in how to skate the track and how to best make this 25 laps in 5 minutes :) I did 9 in 2 on Monday night with a leg that felt like it will fall off at any moment so lets see how this goes tonight! Plus my cheerleader is coming to practice (Love you Mama!) so lets do this!..LOL

This is a short post today...work is crazy and I am also reading a blog of someone who's pretty special ;) so I promise an update after practice tonight. Till then check out the modifications to my logo ...I love it! Look out 007 here I come......OMG just made me think my number is 7...hummmm note to self "must change that to 007" :)

A Derby Birthday

Today is my birthday! I'm amazed with all the emails, phone calls and messages from all my family and friends. I truly am blessed to have such wonderful people in my life! Thank you all and much love! xo

On Saturday my friend Scott hosted a birthday party for me complete with a 35lb Prime Rib Roast that was cooking all day on a spit outside..OMG YUMMY! Thanks Scott for hosting this party I really had such a great time! I should reiterate how much I love all of my friends especially when they show up with a cake that says 21 instead of 39 ..LOL

Several of my Derby Girls came to celebrate with me and the Shenanigans began! Great time girls and I am so glad that you came, good times were had by all! Some more than others! (hum hum Kitty Von Doom...*wink wink*  LOL)

Thanks Fire Crack Ya, Dii Mented and Pixel Ninja for tolerating my drunk ass till 4am! LOL ;)

A few of us have birthdays this week...Crash N' Turn (August 6), Sin D Clobber (August 9) and myself (August 9).   Last Night we had a 3 hour rink practice! It was awesome although I was sure I would die at one point! (I'll get to that later..LOL) Pixel Ninja asked all of us to line up next to each other around the track.  Then he calls Crash N'Turn to the center and then called me to the center as well.  I got a little excited because I thought I was being called upon to do a demonstration ...yup not the case..LOL...Demonstration on how to skate around the track while 20 + derby girls smack your ass for your birthday! ...LOL

OK so stepping out of the birthday post for a second to update you on practice....as part of our skills test we have to skate 25 laps around the track in 5 minutes.  Some of the newer girls (myself included) were asked to skate 10 laps in 2 minutes (working us up to 5 minutes later) First go I did 9 laps, second go I did 8.  Not bad considering I haven't really been taught how to properly skate around the track.  Pixel Ninja wants us to do it naturally first then we will work on technique.  It does make a difference as you can see when watching the veterans skate way more than required in 5 minutes (Shout out to my Derby Wife Kitty Von Doom great job!) Wednesday night we will try again and Pixel Ninja will help us work on technique and how to incorporate the things we have already learned into skating the track properly.  I can't wait!

My ankle was really bothering me last night. Pixel Ninja loosen up my trucks on my skates and it felt sooooo much better! I was however over compensating before then and ended up with a really sore leg...so much so that I thought I would have to go home with my leg in a bag detached at the hip! It was cramping so bad I thought I would have to quit a couple of drills but there was no way I pushed myself and made it through! No way was I gonna quit! Quitting is not a word in my vocab any more!

Klem"Mydia Burns made an AMAZING chocolate cake with boiled icing for Crash N' Turn and I which we all shared in the parking lot after practice! Thanks so much girl it was DELICIOUS!

Thanks girls for all the "love taps" and a special birthday wish for Crash N'Turn and Sin D Clobber xoxo :)

So for the rest of my brithday well my Mom is coming to town tonight to share my birthday with me and I can't wait to see her and bring her to watch our practice tomorrow night!

Derby Wife vs Derby Widow

If you haven't noticed besides the actual sport of Roller Derby there is a whole culture that is quite interesting! I will share some of that culture with you a bit at a time. Fashion, Derby Monsters (sounds scary hey?..LOL) Shenanigans (such fun!), etc....

The focus of this post is to try my very best to explain Derby Wives and Derby Widows.  I think most of you have been able to very quickly see the respect and admiration I have and we all have for each other.  These are some of the quickest friendships I have developed and I am certain these will be lasting friendships! First you have to appreciate the amount of time that we spend together.  We practice 6 hours a week...you tack in travel time to and from practice, fundraising events, league meetings, team shenanigans etc... it turns into spending a lot of time with each other so friendships quickly develop.

Kitty Von Doom and Alise T'Kill
Right after the official announcement ..LOL

Myself I am VERY lucky! I have a Derby Wife (Miss Kitty Von Doom) and a small group of us regulars even refer to each other as Sister Wives (LOL I bet A&E would love to get the rights on that one!) .  I know Kitty Von Doom will have my back and I got hers :) As I know the same applies to my Sister Wives :)This is a summary that I found online written by Kasey Bomber ( LA Derby Dolls) and Ivanna S.Pankin (San Diego Derby Dolls) that sums up what a Derby Wife is pretty nicely.

A derby wife is quite simply this -
  1. She is the one person in this whole sport of roller derby that the very instant you looked at her, you felt like you’d known her since you were a fetus. She looked just like your best friend from fifth grade, or something she did reminded you of all the things you ever liked in anyone else.
  2. She is the first person you’d call if you ever need to get bailed out of jail. (Or in my case, ever need to have an entire legal crusade started in your name.)
  3. She’s the one who will be holding back your hair when you puke after drinking too much, and she won’t let anyone take your picture while doing it.
  4. She’ll ride in the ambulance with you when you lose a tooth, break your wrist, or tear your ACL.She’ll make you laugh the whole way to the hospital, try to steal your pain medication (lovingly), and sneak your favorite food and a beer into recovery.
  5. She’ll make her actual husband understand that if he loves her, he’s gonna have to put up with you, too, no matter how many times you come over forcing him to revisit all the derby-related shows on his Tivo that you missed.
  6. She may not even be your best friend in the league or the sport, but she’d be the one you know will be the first one to back you up, even if you’re dead wrong. She’ll just tell you you’ve lost your fucking mind later in private, possibly kick your ass a little bit, and then be the only one who could ever talk your hotheaded ass into some reason.
  7. If you can find more than one derby wife who can meet those needs, then you are lucky indeed, but myself? I’m a one derby wife gal.
Now the term Derby Widow was coined because derby tends to become a quick obsession, and the derby girl spends soooo much time on derby practices and other events and tasks that her significant other is essentially a widow to derby.  My thought is as a husband/ boyfriend/partner you have three options here to avoid this: 1) Put your big boy panties on and suck it up and be as supportive in your partners new found love of Derby as she is in the things you enjoy!  2) Become involved yourself maybe a men's league or come to train as a Ref 3) Have to deal with the Derby Wife and a Mob of Sister Wives!...LMAO.  I personally have to say everyone I have meet their significant other is very supportive and we haven't had to resort to option #3.....YET

As for me, well I am a single gal and I have always had very simple things that I expect in a relationship.  Simple things that are harder to find than one would think...I have always been very supportive in the past of sports, hobbies and interests so I expect the same although I never really had my own thing before and now I do....I will say there is something about being a single Derby Girl that's kinda fun...I've never had so many free drinks or phone numbers...LOL.....It MUST be the fishnets, gee should bought those puppies long ago!...LMAO.  I will say I would love to find a boyfriend that is willing to wear this t-shirt....LOL.....any takers? ;)

Dii Mented & Vigilante Banshee

Left: Dii Mented Right: Vigilante Banshee
Dii Mented and Vigilante Banshee are two of the founding members of the Dieppe Roller Derby.  They both are pretty amazing people who work hard and live and breath Roller Derby....Without them and all the work they did setting up our league we would not have the Dieppe Roller Derby.  They are pretty much the first two people that Fresh Meat meet when they show up for their first kick at the can.  I should also point out that they are Derby Wives. I will get into more what Derby Wives & Derby Widows are in another post...for now I want to keep it focused on these two cool chicks!

My first night Dii Mented was my buddy...she is the Fresh Meat trainer and since my arrival a few other girls have been helping to share that role.  Dii Mented is a VERY patient woman (you have heard me say that before)....she just so happens to be coach Pixel Ninjas better half, this is a good thing because he will never have to know what it means to be a Derby Widow....LOL....Dii Mented is a great example to follow, she is patient, cheerful and loves Roller Derby....she just doesn't ditch ya either after you graduate into being able to skate with the "big kids" because she always has an eye on you (even when you think she doesn't..LOL) to make sure your remembering those basic things she taught you your first day and patiently walks me through things that I have struggled with.  She recognizes when you push yourself to learn new things and helps you get there.  I often follow her around a bit like a puppy dog because for me its easier to learn if I watch someone do it.  Dii Mented is smooth skater...when I say that I mean it looks effortless, and she can do a demonstration from beginning to end slow, smooth so you can see each step clearly...I love to watch her and I love to learn from her!  I am waiting for the day she tells me to stop following her around, although I doubt it will happen...I know she loves to help us skaters reach our potential :) I also have to say she is a lot of fun to have around on our team shenanigans but I"ll save that for another post.... :)

I have gotten to know Vigilante Banshee pretty good in the past couple of months as we sometimes car pool together.  I have seen her with her skates on for an entire weekend at the JAMboree when we thought they might have to be surgically removed ;) She loves what she does and you can see how hard she works and how much she pushes herself.  She is a lot of fun to do drills with too....during our blocking drills she hops like a bunny...during our push and pull drills she tells me to squat like I'm peeing in the woods...LOL...Vigilante Banshee is very passionate about a lot of things, the environment, the cello, animals (yes she TRIED to bring a grass snake home in my car one day...LOL), her work, her friends and she shares that same passion for Roller Derby and our League.  She even has convinced her boyfriend to learn to skate and become a ref so he too will never know what being a Derby Widow is all about. :)

Both of these amazing people are going to be a force to wreaken with when we start to bout! They have not only developed fantastic skills that set an example for all of us but they have also developed and formed our league to be what it is today and have strong leadership to keep each one of us members in check ;) They have also attended training to ref future bouts and at the JAMboree tested those skills by reffing all weekend!

Here they are in action at the JAMboree in the pretty stripes :)
I want to thank each of them cause they both keep me inspired to well every practice!

Might As Well Jump

At practice last night Pixel Ninja digs out the pool noodles....(I am sure he lays awake at night thinking of new ways to torture us...LOL)....actually the pool noodles are a great tool for a lot of the drills we do as it creates a safe obstacle.  But this time I see him taping them down to floor one in the center and one in each corner and another at the end of the floor....I am not gonna lie I was getting a little excited because I knew this was a drill I didn't try before. (OK lets be honest I was super excited...LOL)

I paired up with FireCrackYa and she explains the drill and demonstrates.  I have to do a figure 8 doing a crossover at the center of the pool noodle...well OK so I try it a few times and got it down.  Then I notice some of the girls doing the same thing but jumping...I think to myself "humm that looks like fun I wanna try" But when in doubt if its what I should do...ask the coach.  So I did he said "Yes you will do that eventually but for now just practice getting the steps when your comfortable you can try the jump."  I think to myself "When I am comfortable?? heck, I wanna do it now" So I did and I have to say I was pretty good...did it a few more times and it felt really good! Dammit I am jumping!...So confidence is up a couple more notches...what now?...LOL

Then the girls start skating around and jumping with both feet off the floor ...well of course I wanna try that too....check with coach make sure its OK to try it and again he says "you can do it when your comfortable, if you give it a try just remember to bend your knees and if you fall fall forward like you have been taught." So you can see from the picture how that turned out..LOL I obviously did not bend my knees enough cause I landed right square on my ass! ...LOL I think I did pretty good for one night though and next week I will get it!

It was pretty cool watching the girls though ....Smokey 5-0 and Klem'Mydia Burns where jumping over skate boxes! Amazing! For our skills tests we only need to be able to jump 3 inches but I have to admit watching them was really something to see!

As for me...well I am just gonna keep on trying :) But for now as Van Halen says (with my own little creative insert..LOL)
I get up, and nothing gets me down.
I like to jump. and then go round and round
And I know, just how it feels.
You've got to roll with the punches to get to what's real
Oh can't you see me standing here,
I'm getting ready for a derby scene I ain't the worst that you've seen.
Oh can't you see what I mean ?

Working at the Car Wash Baby!

We are a skater owned and funded league....which means we actively seek out sponsorships and participate in a lot fundraising events.  Our funds that we raise through these events pays for practice space which as you can imagine can get pretty pricey....and we can't learn derby without a place to practice :)

Today we had our first major fundraiser!  We had a car wash! Oh which reminds me of a catchy tune....play video below....LMAO ;) Hummm ladies I seriously think we need to do our own video next time!! :)

We had a great time! It started first thing in the morning and lasted all day.  Last night was the U2 concert (Which was freaking awesome I have to say!) so the timing of this event was perfect as there were sooooo many people that REALLY NEEDED a car wash...it rained most of yesterday so the concert site was pure mud ...so the timing was perfect! When I say the concert site was muddy....I mean really muddy and I came home with mud up to my knees and from my neck down my backside yes folks I did a mud slide and not because I thought it was a fun thing to do but I slipped and slid about 3 feet down the hill...thanks to the sexy strangers that help pull me out....LOL.....ok I degress...humm sexy strangers...oh no I mean car wash!...LMAO ...boy we washed some dirty cars today! We had a BBQ, and a Bake Sale too. A lot of the girls made baked goods...I didn't because those of you who know me know I cant bake to save my life...but I did get to taste Firecrackya's daughters cupcakes and in two words....PURE HEAVEN!!!! Thanks Amber!

It was a great day and it was great to hang out with everyone outside of practice!

Thanks so much to everyone that came and made donations...your support was incredible and is most appreciated by every single one of us!

Here are a few pictures from today......enjoy :)
